A Republican congressman has introduced an amendment to the Constitution that would allow President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office, arguing that it will ensure “we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee revealed his long-shot measure Thursday that would amend the 22nd Amendment, which sets the current two-term limit for presidents.
“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles, a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, said of Trump in a statement. “President Trump has shown time and time again that his loyalty lies with the American people and our great nation above all else.”
According to Ogles’ proposal, the two-term limit would be extended to three terms, unless the person has already served two consecutive terms. That means former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton would be unable to run again. Someone who has served more than two years of someone else’s term would also be ineligible to run for a third term.
Changing the Constitution would be a tough bid, as any proposed amendment must be ratified by 38 of the 50 U.S. states, which is three-fourths of them.
Ogles’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether his amendment has received any support.
Trump previously suggested running for a third term if lawmakers could “figure it out.”
“I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” he said immediately following the 2024 election, according to The Hill. “Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”
House Republicans, including another Tennessee lawmaker, Rep. Tim Burchett, later told reporters that Trump’s comments were a joke.
“There’s nothing further from the truth,” Burchett said.
Burchett’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether his view on the matter has since changed.
