Fincantieri, Leonardo Contracted for Italian Aircraft Carrier, Destroyer Maintenance

Fincantieri and Leonardo have signed a 190-million euro ($211.5 million) contract to maintain the Italian Navy’s Cavour aircraft carrier and the Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio Horizon-class destroyers.

Work under the agreement will be conducted until 2028 by the Leonardo and Fincantieri joint venture Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN).

The companies will sustain the operational condition of each ship to maintain Italian naval capabilities.

Fincantieri will lead in-service support services for the systems on the Cavour and Horizon vessels.

The equipment covered includes the automation platforms, engines, electrical generation, maneuvering and propulsion systems, and air conditioning.

Fincantieri will also provide specialized services for Cavour’s aircraft elevators and the Horizon vessel’s helicopter transport system.

Meanwhile, Leonardo will focus on subsystems at the La Spezia and Taranto naval bases for the Andrea Doria and Caio Duilio’s combat management, radar sensors, launchers, and weapons.

Recent Italian Navy Projects

Last year, the country received its second multi-purpose offshore ship from Fincantieri as part of a seven-unit patrol fleet contract to be completed in 2026.

In January, the Italian Navy signed an agreement with Iveco to supply 36 amphibious armored vehicles, upgrading the capabilities of Italy’s San Marco Marina Brigade.

The navy also contracted Kongsberg Maritime in February to supply a naval equipment suite for the service’s future Special and Diving Operations – Submarine Rescue Ship.
