Canadians across political spectrum agree on staying Canadian

Polls have consistently shown that very few Canadians have ever been in favor of joining the United States, and the opinion has been growing stronger throughout the pas few decades. A reputable public opinion monitoring program in Canada examined Canadian views toward the US in September 2022, and one thing was striking: Canadians of different political persuasions may disagree on many things, but Americanization isn’t one of them. If there’s one principle uniting Canadians, it’s that Canadians choose Canada every time.

In 1986, 78 percent of Canadians strongly or somewhat disagreed that “Canada and the United States should someday unite into one country.” In 2022, overall disagreement rose to 90 percent. Any guess as to what it might be in 2025?

To appreciate what current opinion means, we have to understand some of the history.
