US Air Force Launches Two Electronic Warfare Detachments

The US Air Force (USAF) has launched two new detachments at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia to bolster the force’s electronic warfare capability.

Detachments from the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing (SWW) and the 87th Electronic Warfare Squadron (EWS) will be tasked with responding to electronic threats by developing new countermeasures.

The launch is part of the standup process for the future 950th Spectrum Warfare Group, which will further assess the USAF’s combat readiness and effectiveness in electronic warfare. Two more detachments are scheduled to join the group by 2027.

USAF Lt. Col. Christopher Ryan Cox will serve as commander of both units.

The 350 SWW’s Impact

The 350 SWW was established in 2021 as the Air Combat Command’s response to the need for electromagnetic spectrum dominance. The wing provides operational, technical, and maintenance expertise for the force.

Additionally, it is responsible for all of USAF’s emergency wartime reprogramming and electronic warfare software development.

“Our team here will identify what our weak points are and point us in the direction we need to be in to improve our capability and fill in gaps to achieve spectrum dominance,” said 350th SSW commander Col. Josh Koslov.

“The best way to avoid war is being able to overmatch our opponents with so much capability they do not want to try to attack us.”

The 87 EWS Commits

Meanwhile, the 87 EWS will serve as the force’s lead electronic warfare assessment program, ensuring the operability of detection, warning, and countermeasures against electronic threats in contested environments.

Koslov said that establishing the squadron’s first detachment at Robins Air Force Base will help the force determine its shortcomings.

“Robins is a good fit for these two new detachments, because the installation has a number of organizations already conducting electronic warfare sustainment, procurement and modernization,” he said.

The program supports six major command wings and the USAF’s Air Force Force Generation model.
